Road User Kills Policeman While Trying To Escape From LATSMA Officials {Video}
The Continuous struggle between roads users and law enforcement agencies on major roads has created more chaotic scenes than any other accidental deaths and injuries.
One of such scene was recorded in a video that went viral on social media, Showing a defiant road user refusing to submit himself for arrest after being waved down by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), alongside men of the Nigerian Police Force. While attempting to drive off his Hunda SUV Jeep from the scene, he accidentally knocked the police man off the bridge,with the lifeless body laying helplessly on the other side of the cliff.
This avoidable accident and many other more brutal ones have been the end product of the menace of some law enforcement agents and the unruly citizens who feel they've had enough of the men on uniform.
LASTMA, one of the leading enforcement agencies on the Lagos roads was created in 2000 to meet the challenges of traffic and arbitrary use of roads by commuters. Its officers act as human traffic lights, or traffic enforcement cameras, directing road users and chasing motorists who break rules – which happens often.
This men are usually found at busy roads wearing uniforms of bright cream shirts and red trousers, brandishing long sticks, beating the sides of the buses to encourage them to move out, or just to announce who’s boss.They most times impound cars, so busted motorists often haggle with them over a fee.This time-consuming process often adds to the traffic congestion on major roads.
“They are terrible. All they want to do is take your money,” says a road user Babatunde Are, 62, the mere thought of losing an hard earned money to this double faced assassin's in uniform has forced some roads users into taking laws into thier hands by trying to defile the stop and search activities of the law enforcement agents.
The irrationality of some roads users, and the gross unprofessionalism of some of these officials has caused lots of avoidable accidents and deaths on major roads.
Until the government wades into the issue, this looks like a trend that will continue because clearly majority of the roads users and law enforcement agencies no longer have respect for human lives.
